Anamsong – No Need to Understand Why
Dear Awesome Woman,
Ever feel pulled to do something, yet your rational mind couldn’t come up with a good reason why?
Perhaps it’s your anamsong. Your what? you ask.
Anamsong is an irish word for ‘soul song.’ I first saw this word on Mind-body Mentor Abigail Steidley’s site. Anamsong is defined as one’s soul song, inner wisdom, the expression of one’s unique purpose, truth or voice.
I’m beginning to see that every time I’ve followed my anamsong, even if it was asking me to do something difficult, it’s lead me to incredible people and life teachings.
When I was in my teens, I attended Duke University. Even though it was one of the most prestigious colleges in America, I chose to transfer to Grinnell College. Most people have not heard of Grinnell – probably because it’s located in a small town in the middle of the cornfields of Iowa. Yet, I felt this anamsong to do the difficult by going against my parents wishes and transferring. It is there that I met my husband and went on to have a wonderful family with him.
I couldn’t explain rationally to myself, nor anyone else what this pull was, but I followed it.
Same with Mind-body coaching. While I was in my first coach training, I felt this pull to also learn about the mind-body connection. I made a collage board from some of the ads for the Mind-body University, put it in my closet and left it there. When the time came to enroll, I couldn’t come up with a good rational explanation why I wanted to take it, but I signed up anyway. I’ve healed my frequent UTIs and back pain, learned some amazing techniques and have the privilege of coaching many wonderful women, bringing healing, clarity and joy to their lives.
These are just two big examples of following my soul song, but every day choices like these come up. No rational explanation why – just a calling or a pull.
It can be difficult in a society and culture that emphasizes the rational, but these soul callings which have no ‘good reason’ behind them are just as important if not even more so.
Next time you feel pulled to learn something new, take a class or even travel somewhere obscure, pay attention. Focus on the what and not the why, and listen closely.
It could be your ‘anamsong’ calling to you.
