Mind-body Syndrome & Stillness
Dear Awesome Woman,
Stillness. What is it and why would we want it? How does it lead to health?
Stillness is dropping into the present moment with awareness. It could be being aware of the sounds around you, the sights around you, the smells around you. It could also be being aware of your emotions. Sorrow, grief, joy, anger, frustration, fear – these emotions have an energy to them and can be felt in the body in the moment they arise.
When we fight these emotions by not wanting to feel them, tension and stress arise in our body. When we surrender to them and accept with awareness, our body drops into a congruent peace.
When things feel a bit topsy turvy our first go to place may be to ignore or distract ourselves from feeling. But the best thing to do is to drop into stillness. Drop into that moment of frustration, sadness, and even resistance. Surrender to being present with ‘what is’ and feel compassion for your humanness. Accept it. Be Aware of it. Be at Peace with it.
You can then choose a present tense affirmation such as – ‘with peace and ease I move forward’ or ‘this too shall pass.’ Comfort yourself with kindness, take a deep belly breath and release, and sprinkle a few thoughts of gratitude.
Your ability to be in stillness in the present moment, even with uncomfortable emotions, helps keep your body healthy, with less tension and stress, enabling you to avoid Mind-body syndrome symptoms like headaches and backaches and those other weird aches that pop up from resisting what is.
