Just Notice
Mind-body Wellness Tip:
Just Notice
Dear Awesome Woman,
A great first step into Mind-body wellness is to just notice. Notice what feels good, notice what feels funky, notice what feels like freedom, notice what feels like joy, notice what feels icky, notice what feels sticky, notice what makes you cringe. You don’t need to scare yourself with thoughts of change. You just need to notice.
Years ago, I used to block all that noticing because if something felt icky or even if something felt good, it could lead to a change that I might not have been comfortable with. If I noticed that a situation or a person felt ‘off’ then it was much easier to stay up in my mind and try to rationalize the situation or ‘pardon’ the person. My mind would say things like “don’t feel that way” or “of course, you need to stay in your job” or “that person didn’t mean to…” or “they’re a good person so stop being so sensitive.” Boundaries? What were those? I thought that I just needed to be nice. Or I’d tell myself: “if only I was less sensitive, I wouldn’t get hurt by that friend, coworker, family member, doctor, etc..”
Gratefully, those days are long over and now I’m very careful to notice what my body is feeling and what my emotions are telling me. I allow myself to feel the yuck or the cringe or the funky even if my mind doesn’t want to acknowledge all that because it could lead to uncomfortable change. And that change can be uncomfortable – it could lead to someone getting upset with me or someone not liking my choices. Or I may actually need to change jobs, doctors, or talk less to a neighbor.
But because I had the courage to notice, my life has a lot more freedom, expansion and joy. Yes, there were changes that I made and some were uncomfortable, but I survived and am much happier for them. I’ve stepped into Mind-body wellness.
You can too. The first step is to just notice. And when your mind screams “Oh no, don’t notice. Change ahead.” Just gently and firmly tell your mind “I am choosing to notice” and then do. Your body and life will thank you.
