Be a Warrior For Your Health: Two Quick & Simple Ways to Start

As women who have an abundance of nurturing instincts, it’s all too easy to fall prey to ignoring our own care. It’s too easy to give ourselves the message that we are selfish if we don’t say “yes” to people’s requests.
But ignoring your own care can cause mind-body pain and health issues and so you must become a Warrior for Your Health. No one else is going to do that for you—they’re too busy benefitting from your “yeses”.
Here’s two quick and simple ways to become that Warrior:
- Take a Pause when someone makes a request. Tell them that you’ll need to think about it and that you’ll get back to them.
Unless it’s an easy “yes” that fills you with joy, let it be an easy Pause. Give yourself time to think the request over in the privacy of your own space and get back to them.
Maybe that’s uncomfortable to do, but you can give yourself the gift of that Pause. Feel that discomfort in your body and yet, still give yourself permission to pause and mull the request over. Decide if doing that thing for the other person is going to effect your health in a negative way or if you’ll wind up feeling resentful. Decide if you’ll be impatient at work or with your family members if you say “yes”to the request. Or if it’s your family members asking you, then decide if it’s something that feels like too much with all the other stuff that you’re juggling.
A “no” to someone can be a “yes” to you and your place in the world. I get asked to do a ton of things — it’s part of being a mom, wife, and community person. Sometimes I say “yes” and sometimes “no”. Sometimes I’ll say “yes” to part of the request or I’ll get creative in the way I fulfill the request.
Years ago, I was not a warrior for my health. I had to learn how to respond with the Pause or a “no” in order to crawl out of the mind-body pain hole I was in. My body hurt all over and I couldn’t exercise, walk normal or take care of my kids without irritation, pain and impatience.
So don’t get to that point. It’s not worth it. Be a Warrior for your Health.
- Check in with your body.
Being a Warrior for your Health means checking in with your body. When there’s lots of stuff to do, how does your body respond? What is it trying to tell you? Is it screaming “No! I need some down time.”? Are your teeth grinding at night and you’re waking up with a headache? Are your shoulders tense, your knees hurting, your bladder irritated, your head spinning? Well, then listen. Something doesn’t feel good to your body and it’s giving you its message loud and clear. What you do with it is up to you, but don’t claim that it didn’t try to tell you something important.
There’s a tool from my life coach mentor, Martha Beck, that’s very helpful. It’s called the 3 B’s: Bag it, Barter it, Better it.
Bagging something means not doing something that drains your energy. Put simply, if you can bag something that doesn’t bring you joy or even put it aside for a later time, then do so. Do you really need to run to the store now or can you take a moment of fresh air self-care with a short, slow walk around the block? Even bagging something for an hour and choosing to get some nature in, meditate or do something creative can be a healthy step for your health.
Bartering something that drains your energy means getting help — either paid help or doing an exchange. Can you do a carpool with someone to lessen your load? I once hired a driver to do my carpool for a month when I had a new baby, a toddler who napped and other kids in school.
Can you get some cleaning help? Even once a week can make a difference if its too much to do all yourself.
Bettering something means exactly that. You have something to do that you don’t enjoy, but you’re choosing to do it for long term benefits or because it matters to you, so you better it. Can you better that trip to the store with listening to soothing music or a comedy audio that makes you laugh? Then great! Put those headsets on and make your time at the store better because you’re listening to something you love.
