What To Do With Fear
Mindbody Wellness Clarity Tip:
What to Do With Fear
Dear Awesome Woman,
There are two types of fear: ‘true’ fear and ‘future-tripping’ fear.
‘True’ fear, like the kind you have when a car swerves into your lane on the highway, G-d forbid, snaps you immediately into the present moment. It’s in the body and is there to get you very focused so you can take efficient action to get to a place of safety. A great book to read on ‘true’ fear and its life saving benefits is “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin De Becker.
‘Future-tripping’ fear, on the other hand, takes you out of the present moment and puts you into the future—into a place and time that you can’t control. It’s all in your head, but can have a paralyzing effect on your body. The best way to deal with this type of fear is to hug it closer and drop the resistance to it.
Embrace it because there is some part of you—it could be your inner child, your vulnerable self, or your terrified ego—that needs to be heard.
This ‘future-tripping’ fear may also have to be unravelled a bit. Unravelled because that worry may be cluing you into something that does need to be taken care of in the present moment. If you’re going on a trip and feeling worried that you’ll forget to pack an important item, then you’re getting the message to make a list or to take some time to pack sooner than later.
Either way, whichever type of fear is showing up for you, hug it closer and give it love. It’s got so much to say.
