Mindbody Wellness Clarity Tip:
Don’t Do This! — The Fastest Way to Pain.
Dear Awesome Woman,
Want to know the fastest way to pain? Both the physical kind and the emotional kind? It’s googling negativity with your mind.
What do I mean?
If you make a mistake and then start beating yourself up by thinking how you’re an awful business person, mother, wife, friend, daughter or whatever, then your body will clench up, tighten up, and constrict blood flow. And before even the physical pain sets in, you’ll be emotionally miserable.
Here is what happens, blow by blow: when you think that you’re terrible, then your mind googles proof of all the times you’ve messed up—all the mistakes you’ve made, money losses you’ve had, people you’ve hurt. And the list goes on. Your mind is a great machine. It can dredge up memories in seconds and the evidence can be painful. Your body will fast track to constriction, to nervous system dysregulation, to tension. Who wants that?
Not me and hopefully, not you!
But you can switch directions. If you speak kindly and compassionately to yourself, your mind won’t google the negative evidence. If you say, I’m a great … and sometimes I make mistakes, then your jaw won’t clench, your stomach won’t tighten, your shoulders won’t raise. You won’t be left with a migraine, digestive issues or pinched nerves. Your mind won’t google all your negative stuff and send your body into constriction. And it just may google evidence to support that you’re a great …
I love to set myself up for success by placing upbeat messages in my surroundings—in my closet, in my office, in my kitchen. When I was out of town at a conference, I wandered into the hotel lobby store and found a key chain with the message: ‘World’s Best Mom’. I smiled to myself and bought it. It hangs up in my office.
Am I the world’s best mom? No, probably not and definitely do not ask my kids. They just may give you a run down on all the mistakes I made with them. So why did I buy the keychain? I bought it because every time I look at it, my mind googles all the wonderful things I did do right by my kids. And that makes me want to do more. My energy feels uplifted, my mood is positive and I feel empowered to be that kind of mom.
So, next time you make a mistake, be careful what you think. Be gentle on yourself. You can take accountability and apologize if necessary. You can make a pact with yourself to do something different next time. But don’t google your awfulness. Don’t go down the rabbit hole of beating yourself up with self-criticism. Your mind would google evidence of all your ‘failure’ and your body and soul will hurt.
When you google proof positive of your magnificence, your vibration rises to that light.
