Is Your Body In Pain From Stress?

How are you holding up during these very strange times? Some of you may be experiencing pain symptoms from the emotional stress of this crisis. There is a lot of grief, fear, anger, frustration and sadness circulating in the atmosphere now.
Even if you are healthy and well, these are difficult circumstances to navigate. As I mentioned in a previous newsletter—”The Most Important Message Right Now” —the world the way we knew it to be is dissolving.
Mindbody symptoms of pain—headaches, leg pain, backaches, stomach issues, neck soreness— are a result of suppressed emotion, tension held within and a lack of oxygen supplied to parts of the body. The pain is very real and …painful. And it’s wonderful to have chiropractic adjustments, massages and cranial sacral treatments—those do help blood flow, release tension and get emotional energetic flow. Problem is most likely you are unable to do these hands-on-treatments because of lockdown and virus-fear.
So what can you do?
You can help access healing by turning inward and getting honest about your emotions— especially anger, fear, disappointment, grief and sadness. Emotions are ‘energy in motion’. They show up as physical sensations in the body, starting out very quiet and subtle, almost vibrational. When ignored, they get louder and louder until screaming as a migraine, backache, stomach issues or some other pain or weakness in the body. The key here is to notice as soon as possible and as often as possible the emotion as a physical sensation. The clenched jaw because you’re angry, the rock in your stomach because you’re afraid, the constricted breath because you’re grieving.
Many of us have the very normal habit of ignoring these physical sensations (emotions). But this emotional energy has much wisdom to share about what we are experiencing and how to get relief. The healing begins when we are honest with ourselves, when we pay attention to our bodies’ messages and when we are willing to explore our inner emotional world.
I’ll make a gentle suggestion here:
Put your attention inward. Wiggle your toes, take a deep inhale/exhale and notice what physical sensation is happening in your body. Does your stomach hurt? Is there a lump in your throat, a surge of heat welling up in your chest? Is your breathing shallower? Jaw clenched? Whatever the physical sensation is, just be aware of it and allow it for half a minute or longer. You can even put your hand on that part of your body to keep your focus on it. Breathe and know that you are safe in putting your attention on your body and feeling the emotional energy that is present. Allow that physical sensation to just exist in your awareness. This action enables emotional energy to flow and intuitive wisdom to be heard. You may get a ‘knowing’ of which emotion it is—anger, irritation, annoyance, rage, sadness, grief, disappointment or hurt. The word is not as important as noticing the sensation, but may give you additional clarity in your awareness.
Also, as your attention remains inward on the bodily sensation, you may notice a change of the energy. My clients often share that one area of their body has pain or a sensation and then, after their attention has been on it, it morphs into another physical sensation in a different part of their body.
For example, they may feel a tightness in their chest and after I give them thirty seconds to focus their attention there, they’ll share that that sensation is gone, but that their stomach feels funny. This is their emotional energy flowing and shifting to be processed and give them body/soul wisdom. It is also healing their body. With my clients we’ll dive into what their thoughts are telling them around a situation and integrate their body and soul wisdom, dissolving whatever “mind beliefs” that are holding them back from living their authentic selves. When you take the time to allow your body’s emotional message to be heard, the recognized energy flows so it doesn’t get stuck as a physical pain later on. As opposed to ignoring and suppressing the emotional messages your body is communicating to you, you are accessing them instead. The pain symptoms may start to disappear since you are listening inward.
Send your body a lot of love now, it is going through a lot with you. Massage the parts that are hurting and whisper loving messages of kindness. Know there are some things you can control and many things you cannot. You cannot choose how long lockdown will last, you cannot choose how the economy will do and you cannot choose who will get sick and who will be well.
But you can choose how much media you let into your little world. And if you’re feeling healthy, you can choose to have deep gratitude and find joy everyday. You can choose to do things that are easy and restful or if you’ve got energy, then you can choose to be playful, exercise and put efforts into projects. Your mood may vary throughout the day so pay attention to what it is telling you that you need.
The uncertainty of today is very real and the mind “futurizing” that it knows things, is make believe. Be present with your body and your emotions to help relieve stress, tension and pain.
