Freaking Out, Ruminating or Feeling Stuck? A Mindbody Lesson from a Rat.
Mindbody Wellness Clarity Tip
Dear Awesome Woman,
One night, walking home, I heard a squeak and rustle in the bushes next to me. I turned my head and there it was—a rat. Screaming, I jumped and hurried away.
My mind raced with the image of the rat and I couldn’t stop cringing and thinking “ooh, ugh, ooh, ugh, how gross.”
And then I intuited the words, “let it flow, Babe!”
I had been trained as a Mindbody healer and the panic of the moment had caused me to forget the most important wisdom—drop into the body and allow emotional energy to flow. I had been freaking out in my head, but the processing of a fright happens in the body.
So, as I continued to walk, I put my awareness on the physical sensations that were going on inside of me. I noticed all kinds of swirling in my chest and abdomen, and felt a sense of alarm. To bring even more presence to the situation, I placed a hand on my stomach and said internally “such an intense commotion is happening in my body.” I also reminded myself that I was safe in feeling this intensity.
And that was it.
By the time I got to my house a few minutes later, my mind was on other things. I had completely forgotten about the rat. Dropping into my body and noticing the physical sensations allowed the energy of those sensations to flow. My body processed what it needed to, and my thoughts moved on.
How often do you notice that you are in your head, freaking out and ruminating?
Your body wants to be heard, noticed and connected to, but in society you were probably taught to just stay in your head, rationalizing and attempting to think your way to a solution.
But not all the answers are in your head. Dropping into your body can help you discover the answers you need. You can process emotions, release energy and access intuition. The wisdom of your body and soul can be so supportive and healing, guiding you through the circumstances of life.
The rat situation was not a big deal. But it could have become a big deal health-wise if my body had kept swirling with sensation while my mind tried to talk its way out of the discomfort. That stuck anxiety, fear and shock may have remained in my cells.
Instead, the key was to drop into my body to process the commotion of feelings coming up. With the attention on that inner physicality, the emotional energy dissipated and so did the sense of alarm. By the time I stepped into my house, my body was calm and my mind ready to engage in interacting with my family.
So, the Mindbody tip I’m sharing with you today is when you find yourself ruminating in your mind— “let it flow, Babe”—drop into your body and notice the physical sensations happening there. Your body and soul will thank you!
