Summer Self-Care Mindbody Wellness Checklist
Summer Self-Care Mindbody Wellness Checklist
Dear Awesome Woman,
With all the busyness as well as looseness of summer upon us, it’s still important to keep up the care of our Mindbody Wellness. Our emotions and souls never want to be ignored or placed on the back burner. Our bodies will let us know loud and clear (bringing pain symptoms, G-d forbid) if we are suppressing or pushing off wisdom from our inner emotional realm. Spending moments here and there with simple practices can keep your mindbody connection tuned up and healthy.
Please take daily moments to:
1. Sense Your Senses: This allows for relaxed awareness in your day. Close your eyes and take a soft breath into your belly and release. What do hear?—Throw your hearing out as far as you can in every direction. Put on your raccoon ears and listen. It’s incredible how much is going on in our environment that we don’t have awareness of. Are you sitting? What does that feel like? Are you standing? Notice your heels on the ground, gravity supporting you. What do your clothes feel like on your body? Just notice. What do you smell? What do you taste in your mouth? Now open your eyes and gently take in with wonder what you see. This moment gets you out of tunnel vision, into an expanded sense of awareness.
2. Pause & Breathe: Have a place or object in your home—the bathroom, a special picture, a sticker that you put up on the fridge— that when you come to it, you take a moment to pause, breathe into your belly, and raise your arms up to the ceiling. With this moment, you are giving yourself a conscious breath and expanding your body. We sometimes don’t realize that we hold our breath throughout the day, that our chests are a bit constricted, and that our shoulders are holding tension. This little moment of pause and breath with arms stretched upward will bring awareness and help release what’s being held.
3. Do Simple Creativity: Take some time to collage, paint rocks, do a coloring page, garden, weave or whatever floats your boat when it comes to simply being creative. Being simply creative is not about art, it’s about soul expression. It’s about giving birth to something that exists in the hidden realm—your hidden realm. It’s about the process, not about the result. Collaging, gardening, painting with watercolor pencils, and weaving nests were a huge part of my healing process and I’ve encouraged many women to do the same. Taking even ½ hour out of a busy day, and giving yourself time to play creatively is healthy for your mind, your body and your soul. If you need encouragement, you could take a look at Julia Cameron’s book, “The Artist’s Way” or Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Big Magic.” You don’t need to be an artist or an artist-wanna-be to enjoy these books encouraging creativity. They’re just to help you overcome the gremlins and shame attacks that can stop you from exposing your creative side, even to yourself.
4. Feel Your Feelings: Notice the physical sensations in your body. What’s going on inside there? Place a hand on any tightness, any tension, any expansion. Your body has messages to share with you and your ability to listen can be refined. Here’s a few to notice:
Excitement—An uplifting of the chest that energizes you positively.
Nerves—A mixture of excitement, vulnerability and fear of the unknown.
Fear (dread)—A message from your body asking you to pay attention to something that doesn’t feel safe. It may be felt as a sinking in your stomach.
Anger—A surge of energy trying to set a boundary. Asks for action to be taken—words to be said or physical distancing—a protection of sorts. It may be felt as a constriction in the chest, a tightening of the jaw, a furrowing of the brows or a tingling in the extremities.
No matter how busy you are with work, children, family or guests, taking a moment in your day to do at least one of these Mindbody Wellness tips will help keep you safe and sane. Here’s your checklist: Pause Sense Breathe Create Feel & Enjoy!
There is a famous saying by the wise Jewish sage, Hillel, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, who am I? If not now, when?” Ethics of the Fathers, 1:14
Let this be a reminder that we need to take care of our health, be kind to others and that the time is now. Amen!
