Hot Flashes—If You Can’t Beat ‘Em Join Them!

Dear Awesome Woman,
Hot flashes. Every woman dreads them! That time when the body heats up to an unbearable temperature and even stripping down to our jammies can’t bring down that internal (and infernal) temperature.
Now, you may or not be in this time of life—the time of menopause, when throughout the day and night the body can feel on fire, but just keep reading because I’ll be sharing a Mindbody Wellness tip that can be applied to other physical conditions as well. And if you are a woman in menopause, experiencing hot flashes, then try this technique on for size—join up with the heat.
What do I mean? Often when we experience discomfort in our bodies, our first instinct is to dissociate. Rightfully so we want to move away from the pain. But this kind of dissociation from the body doesn’t allow the energy to flow and be released from the body. Instead, it can stay stuck which is something that none of us want.
Physical sensations within the body are meant to be noticed, not brushed off.
A rumbling in the stomach—hunger. You may choose not to eat something right away, but you can take a few seconds to notice your body talking to you.
A drop in your stomach if someone you love criticizes you. Put your hand there and feel that hurt, that pain. You may need to speak up or ROAR! it out.
A co-worker has committed to something and then drops the ball. Your jaw tightens—put your hand there and notice your anger. And then breathe, speak up or ROAR! it out to get wisdom about the situation.
What you’re doing with each of these actions is taking the time to notice your body’s messages to you. This act of noticing the physical sensations helps the energy flow.
So, if you’re having a hot flash, stay with it. You can put your hand on your chest, noticing the heat and warmth and just acknowledge it with these words, “I’m feeling so hot.” And breathe. You’re letting the energy flow and it will dissipate.
I was fortunate that when I went through menopause with the accompanied hot flashes, I was already a Somatic/Mindbody healer. This meant that I had enough practice and knowledge to stay in my body when I felt uncomfortable sensations. And because of this, the period of hot flashes did not last long. I even wondered if those strange internal heat waves was the way a woman’s body let off the steam of a half-centuried lived life. Perhaps the hot flashes were mother nature’s way of releasing stuck pockets of brokenheartedness, resentment, grief, anger, frustration, and disappointment. I don’t know—it’s just a theory. But either way, each time a wave of extreme warmth burned through me, I put my hand on my chest and joined up with it. I breathed gently and gave myself and my body kindness for a life long-lived. Grace.
So, even if you’re not experiencing this stage of life, you have tremendous internal power as a woman. Stay with your body instead of leaving it. Join up with it and let it be your best friend.
