The Sanctity of Simplicity
Mindbody Wellness Clarity Tips
Dear Awesome Woman,
Do you find yourself getting caught up in living in the mind instead of living in the world? I know that for me, often time passes as I go from activity to activity—getting up, getting out, eating, driving etc. and yet, I’m not in these activities as a participant. I’m just getting them over with.
My mind also has the tendency to focus on the past or on the future.
Byron Katie, the creator of The Work, offers a different option. I taped up this tip near my desk to help keep me mindful throughout the day. I think that I need to tape it to my forehead so I won’t forget it, but since that would look funny and be distracting and dangerous, I thought that I would share it with you today in hopes that not only will it be anchored stronger in my reality, but perhaps you can gain something from it as well.
“LIVE NOW: JUST DO THE DISHES
Become mindful of the verbs you use: was, did, will, are going to etc. To speak of the past in the present is to reawaken and recreate it fully in the present, if only in our minds, and then we are lost to what is present for us now. To speak of the future is to create and live with a fantasy.
If you want to experience fear, think of the future.
If you want to experience shame and guilt, think of the past.
Just focus on the dishes in front of you.
“Doing the dishes” is a practice of learning to love the action that is in front of you. Your inner voice or intuition guides you all day long to do simple things such as doing the dishes, driving to work, or sweeping the floor. Allow the sanctity of simplicity. Listening to your inner voice and then acting on its suggestions with implicit trust creates a life that is more graceful, effortless, and miraculous.” Byron Katie
And of course, we do plan for the future and have desires as well as appointments and schedules, but I think the point that Byron Katie is making is that there’s more presence and connectedness in the moment to be had when we are mindful of what we are doing and what we are being called to do.
There’s also another thing that you can do to be more present in the world—it’s called Sticker Breathing. A coach once suggested this to me and I still have my sticker up!
This tip will not only help you be in the present moment, but it will help your nervous system feel safe and give you a release of mindbody tension. Put one or a few stickers on places throughout your home. About three times a day, take a pause when you come across the sticker, and breathe a deep inhale in and release.
Feel your feet standing solidly on the floor and listen to the sounds around you. You can also bring your arms over your head, curl your fingers onto the top of your crown—it makes a heart shape—and get that expansion in your chest (anyone who lives with you may think you’re being weird, but that’s ok! It’s about time all of us own our weirdness and release ourselves from the social self—but that’s for another newsletter). Relax any parts of you that are holding tight. Pay particular awareness to your stomach and back area where you may tend to hold tension. Be grateful for the simplicity of breathing, listening and standing.
I think that one thing we may have all learned from the pandemic is that we can’t ever take anything for granted. There is a sanctity in the simplicity of life. When I sat with my doctor the other day, I told her how grateful I was to be able to come in for a checkup since last year, that wasn’t a possibility. We may sometimes be rushing through our days, but instead of our minds taking us away from what we’re doing, we can use it to be in what we’re doing. There can be peace in that moment and a gratitude for the simplicity of life.

“I came to Miriam looking for help recovering from a painful breakup with a covert narcissist that I’d been suffering over for far too long. I realized that I’d not only been struggling from my most recent relationship but also from my childhood relationship with my father, which I thought I’d dealt with years ago. I learned that I had energy stuck in my body from real traumas I’d experienced, which talk alone was just not able to process. Miriam helped me with real-time processing in my body and clearing the immediate pain, as well as healing the source of my unhealthy relationship choices, and given me tools for compassionately helping myself when difficult emotions arise in the future, leaving me feeling stable and self assured about myself and my future.”

“I began working with Miriam after several years of extreme stress and trauma due, among other things, to the prolonged illness of my mother. The grief, stress and other toxic emotions that these situations naturally generated were keeping me from moving forward in my business. In addition, the frustration of feeling so deeply stuck was affecting my relationships, my energy levels and sense of well-being, and more. The sessions Miriam and I did together were healing and illuminating, interesting and uplifting. They took me deep into my intuition, gave me profound insights into some of the underlying limiting emotions and beliefs that were holding me back, allowed me to reframe many of the things that were in my way and in some cases to actually energetically move them aside.
After our work together, I was able to create an extremely successful program, and with far more ease than I would have expected.
I have since recommended several people to Miriam, and would unequivocally do so for anyone who is interested in Mindbody coaching.”
