When You Wake Up with Weird Pain
When You Wake Up with Weird Pain
Mindbody Wellness & Clarity Tips
Dear Awesome Woman,
The other morning I woke up with pain by my left clavicle. I was like, “What the heck is this?” It’s not like I’m a heavy-duty weight lifter or exercise fiend, why would I have pain there? The second thought was, “I must have slept wrong.”
But I know better than that. I know the weirdness of mindbody syndrome and how it presents itself as eye twitches, joint pain, muscle aches, sciatica, plantar fascitis, vertigo, etc. And it fools you because one day it’s joint pain and the next day it’ll be an eye twitch to be followed with weird symptoms like clavicle pain.
I spent a minute rubbing it and then asked myself: what’s really going on? And I meant emotionally.
I thought back to the previous day. I had come across a Facebook post that was actually mine but not shared as mine. The person posted it without my name. It was from last year and had actually gone viral (both mine with my name on it and theirs without my name on it).
Now, I love sharing thoughts and ideas on Facebook. I love to write and I see that people are inspired by the things I say. I keep most of the posts public so that they can be shared. Sometimes people share the actual post or cut and copy the words but link it back to me as the author. All that is great and makes me happy. What disturbs me and doesn’t make me happy is when I come across my words plagiarized. This has only happened a few times, but it’s a bit shocking and disturbing when I come across it.
Rubbing that clavicle area, I determined that this must have been the emotional trigger for the physical pain. I had felt a bit shocked and angry coming across that post the night before and even though I had processed some of that emotion using the ROAR! Process, my body was still sharing with me that there was a bit more to release. I took some time to do that including rubbing it gently throughout the day.
Emotions are “energy in motion” and exist in your body as physical sensations. They carry messages for you.
A clenched jaw can indicate anger and lead to migraines.
A constriction in the chest can also indicate anger and lead to a whole host of problems in the body because of shallow breaths.
A stomach tightness can indicate fear and lead to digestive issues.
If you wake up with weird pain, sure—you can consider getting a different mattress or sleeping in a different position, but it also behooves you to look at what may have emotionally triggered that pain.
Could it have been:
A business or money worry?
Did you push yourself too much and too hard on a project? Worked too many hours on it, driving your body into tension?
Did you have a funky interaction with a co-worker, a friend, a family member, or even a stranger?
Are you an introvert (see: Recipe for an Introvert (and Extroverts Needing a Break) trying to go out too much and interact? Did you get overwhelmed (see: For Empaths—How to Avoid Overwhelm in a Very Busy World?
Are you an extrovert needing more interaction and activity? Are you bored?
What emotions were triggered? Sadness, anger, shame, or fear?
Be aware that each emotion besides carrying messages be calling to you to take action. For example, since my boundaries had been violated with the plagiarizing of the post, I had chosen to speak up. I kindly reached out to the person through private messaging and shared with them that I was the author of the post and linked them to the original post. In this particular situation, I really wanted a peaceful exchange. And it was. The person responded and we exchanged words of blessings.
With pain, you can always get massages, physical therapy, order a new mattress, eat healthier, and take ibuprofen. But at the same time, dive into what could be an emotional source of the problem—get honest and look within.
Emotions are not meant to be ignored—they are there for you for a reason. So if you wake up with an eyelid twitching, numbness in your toe, or a headache, see if you had a fight with your spouse, a conflict at work, or some guilt about something you said to a friend. And then no, it’s most likely not the mattress.
