Don’t Lock Yourself in a Label
Don’t Lock Yourself in a Label
Mindbody Wellness Clarity Tips
Dear Awesome Woman,
Labels, labels, labels. Don’t lock yourself in them trying to behave the same way in every situation:
“I just want to be a nice person”
“I just want to be a patient person.”
“I just want to be an accomplished person.”
We’re not meant to have labels stuck on us—not from others and not from ourselves. Life changes constantly, relationships change constantly and therefore, being in what author, Martha Beck, calls “constant creative response” to what is happening at the moment is really the only way to be. I had to contemplate this term when I first heard it, but now it makes total sense and is very freeing and realistic.
There are certain ways of being that appeal to many of us as a result of our upbringings and societal pressure. Perhaps we want to be seen as always patient, always calm, always present, always accomplished and always nice. But being in “creative response” means to me that each situation has its own calling.
* I might be a very patient person with many things, but when a truck blocked the road and tried many attempts to back into the store garage, and the red car in front of me just sat waiting, I took the opportunity to pass that car very assertively with many honks to make sure the truck wouldn’t back into me. Cars behind me were dangerously lined up into an intersection, I needed to get my daughter to her job, and maybe the person in the red car had all the time in the world to ponder as the truck driver tried repeatedly to do his job of backing up, but I decided not to be patient. I decided to be assertive.
* If a borderline/narcissist crosses the path of a client, I’m very firm with my advice. Run like crazy—no niceness allowed. These energy vampires eat up nice and kind people and then if the victim is lucky, they get spit out, but not before untold, toxic damage is done to them— mind, body and soul.
* Perhaps you love to label yourself as a very active, accomplished person. But if you ever get mindbody symptoms, like vertigo, migraines, plantar fasciitis, etc., then it’s time to get honest with yourself, stop the self-pressure, process your emotions, rest and play more, and stop trying to accomplish so much. Your body wants to heal.
So, don’t get locked in labels of yourself trying hard to live up to your or society’s expectations of how you should be. Instead, be in creative response to your body’s wise discernment of a situation or person that you’re interacting with. Labels are for stagnant papers and envelopes and you are not that.

“I had been having frequent bladder issues and after doing some research, I came across the information that this could be happening due to my inability to process emotions such as anger and stress. I did notice that they were coming after particularly stressful times and after reading the Mind Body Prescription, I decided to seek out a coach who specialized in this type of healing. Each session I had with her was really powerful and impactful. I would highly recommend (and have!) that anyone struggling with mindbody pain, work with Miriam.”

“I picked this book up on the recommendation from a friend and once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. Miriam’s memoir of her journey to find faith in God’s love and the wisdom of the Torah is set to the backdrop of connecting to romantic love.
The way she wrote about her struggles to find and accept faith, it felt as if she was pulling me right along with her and I was somehow blessed with a piece of her hard earned wisdom. While I am not of Jewish faith, I felt deeply connected to what she shared. And in the final chapter, her call for everyone of all faiths to do what we can to allow love to transform the world into a place of peace. It is just the salve I feel the world needs right now for deep healing.” – Sherrie Papa
