How Do You Escape Limiting Beliefs? The Mindbody Wellness Way, Of Course!

How do you escape limiting beliefs? How do you drop your emotional baggage? How do you leave the constrictions of your mind and tap into your intuition?
The Mindbody Wellness Way, of course! That means dropping out of your mind and going into your body.
Let’s say that you have limiting thinking patterns such as these:
- Only focusing on the negative of a situation.
- Thinking black and white, good and bad.
- Using words like always and never.
- Jumping into another person’s mind and pretending to “know” why they did what they did and what they for sure think about you.
- Expecting the worst.
- Comparing and despairing—another person or their life is soooo much better than you and yours.
- Locking yourself into a whole range of rules with the ominous word: “should”
One of the most important skills that I learned in my coach training was to catch limiting beliefs. One of the most important skills that I learned in my mindbody/somatic training was to understand the effect beliefs have on the body.
If you’ve ever been to a kinesiologist, then you know that they test your body on which foods cause strength or weakness in your body. The practitioner will have you hold something in one arm and try to push the other arm down. If your arm stays firm, that means that the food is good for you and vice versa.
Well, did you know that it works the same way with your thoughts? If you hold a certain thought in your mind, your body either feels strong, expansive and firm or weak, tense and constricted.
Let’s give some examples from the thought patterns above and please use your own to feel into your body—see if there is an expansion, strength or even neutralness in your body or a tightness in your chest, face, or a sinking feeling. Also notice if there is a sense of arrogance, disdain or shame.
- “I’m a terrible business woman, mother, sister, daughter etc…”
- “People who vote for … are my kind of people. The ones who vote for … are really messed up.”
- “He always makes that mistake!”
- “She gave me that look because she doesn’t like me.”
- “I’ll never get married, get a job I like, be able to move…”
- “She is so much more confident, lucky, and has it together more than me.”
- “I know I should say yes, but I’m just so tired. But, really, I should go—it wouldn’t be nice not to.”
What happens in your body with these kind of thoughts? There is a somatic (body) effect —a very real physical effect on your organs, muscles, digestive track and on your nervous system. Some thoughts make us want to shut down, want to run and hide, want to scream and shout—they activate the fight, flight, freeze, and despair mode of the nervous system. Our intuition is hard to hear in these states and accessing our common sense is out of reach when our body is in disorder.
And just to be clear, I’m not advocating ignoring your feelings. Emotions are “energy in motion” and present themselves as physical sensations in the body. Our body wants to be heard, our emotions need to be honored. But at the same time, it is helpful to us to understand what our mind is telling us. Thoughts are not necessarily true and do affect the body. We all have childhood wounds and limiting beliefs from society.
We also very much want the flight and fight aspects of our nervous systems to be activated at times in our lives. We are integrated beings and need all of our human pieces.
