Love Yourself More Today
Love Yourself More Today
Mindbody Wellness & Clarity Tips
Dear Awesome Woman,
Love yourself more today—a little bit of kindness goes a long way. Kindness strengthens the body, criticism and judgment weaken the body, G-d forbid.
Now that the holiday season is winding down, how do you feel? Did things go as you hoped? Perhaps there was a mix of both the wonderful and the disappointments.
For the wonderful, it’s important to be grateful for and never to take anything for granted. As I try to mention often in my newsletters, I have a white board by my bed and when I awaken, I first say a prayer of gratitude, and then jot down a few things that I never take for granted.
Wonder Woman actress, Gal Gadot, sums up the early-morning Jewish prayer of gratitude beautifully in a Vanity Fair article (11/2020 issue): “In the Jewish culture there’s a prayer that you’re supposed to say every time you wake up in the morning to thank God for, you know, keeping you alive,” Gadot explains, referring to the Jewish prayer, Modeh Ani. “You say ‘modeh ani’, which means ‘I give thanks’… So every morning I wake up and step out of bed and I say ‘Thank you for everything, thank you, thank, you, thank you…Nothing is to be taken for granted.”
The words of the Modeh Ani are:
“I gratefully thank you, O living and eternal King, for You have returned my soul within me with compassion – great is Your faithfulness!”
The word “Modeh” meaning “admit, thank, surrender” gives space to the infinite in our lives.
What habitually follows for me after this prayer is a list of the many things that I don’t take for granted. Sometimes I’ll repeat things on the list (eyesight, family, limbs etc.) and often I’ll jot down new things. Gratitude is a high vibration and what we have today can be gone tomorrow (G-d forbid) so it’s a beautiful practice to be thankful daily. This brings expansiveness to our souls and bodies. With the holiday happenings that you experienced and took part in, take moments to jot down what went well and what was satisfactory to you. In other words, what went right!
And what about the disappointments? The spider webs of confusion in the mind, the small or large griefs and the things that didn’t go as planned? What can you do with those things?
- Feel them in the body.
If it’s sadness, it may sit in the eyes.
If it’s grief, it may appear as a heaviness in the chest.
If it’s anger, there may be a tightness in the jaw or chest.
If it’s anxiety, we may want to run as far and fast as possible.
Emotions are “energy in motion” and are present in the body as physical sensations. This energy flows and changes as we bring awareness to it. Of course, there may be limiting beliefs or past trauma and wounds presenting themselves as well, but it is always good to start with the present moment for processing and healing. This is the somatic way.
2. After noticing sensations in the body and allowing them to be there with you, you can start to take tiny turtle steps of action.
Can you tidy up or organize a little space? Put some things away? Little chunks of action lead to feelings of satisfaction.
Taking control over a part of your life that you have control over keeps you in your lane. Also, take notice if you gave too much of your energy or time away. 3. Do some self-care and celebrate yourself.
Ask yourself this question, “What feels like self-kindness right now?” Resting, doodling, tapping into your creativity, going for a nature walk, calling a friend, etc.
And for sure, take moments throughout your day to celebrate yourself (Arms Up! And Cheer Yourself On!)! As a soul in a body, you do a lot just by getting out of bed and contending with a physical world. Kindness and celebration is very healing and healthy for the body, in particular the nervous system. You owe it to yourself to love yourself more today!
