Your Body’s Constructive Message of Anger
Your Body’s Constructive Message of Anger
Mindbody Wellness Clarity Tips
Dear Awesome Woman,
What does the emotion of anger feel like in your body? Emotions are “energy in motion” and are felt as physical sensations in your body. Therefore, when you are angry, frustrated, annoyed, or perturbed, it is not just in your mind. It is in your body. Your body is sending signals to you and whispering—”pay attention, pay attention, listen to me.”
Now, you may be ruminating in your mind trying to solve the problem or figure out who is right and who is wrong in a situation, but the key to wisdom is dropping into your body. What is your body telling you?
For the emotion of anger, your body is telling you any of these things:
1) there has been a boundary violation
2) you need to self-protect
3) you need to take a different action
4) a principle of yours is being disrespected
What are the physical symptoms your body is sharing with you? Is there heat flowing through you? Is your jaw clenched? Is your chest tight? Are your fists bunched up?
Noticing the physical sensations of your body will drop you out of staying stuck in your mind. It will stop that ruminating. You can also add the very effective ROAR! Process which is a somatic/mindbody technique I use for myself and with my clients. I developed it to release ruminating, to process emotions, such as anger, resentment, and fear, and to unblock the freeze response.
Many of us have the tendency to dissociate from our bodies especially when there is the emotion of anger with uncomfortable stress hormones, heat, and tightness surging inside. But the safest place to be is in your body because it is there where you receive the information that you need.
Being in your body means being in your lane of the highway. That is where you have the most control. You can feel the sensation in your body which allows the energy to flow and take an action that is self-protective by leaving the scene. Sometimes it is wise to speak up though more often it is wiser to remain quiet until you have processed your anger by way of breath and being aware of the physical sensations inside you.
After you have physically processed your anger, what action do you need to take that will bring about a different circumstance?
1) Do you need to speak up? Please see my free marriage e-guide if your anger involves your husband since speaking up in the way that makes the most sense will not usually benefit the circumstances. Marriage communication is above the logical mind so what we think we should say will usually lead to broken trust.
If the situation does not involve your husband, but a co-worker, a boss, a friend, a relative, then will speaking up help or hurt the relationship? Are you refusing to see a quality or trait about the other person that your intuitive senses want you to see? Sometimes relationships need to shift, get distanced, or end. Sometimes limitations need to be accepted because we are all human and not perfect (including you!). Tuning into your body’s wisdom of self-protection may open your mind to seeing what you previously have refused to see.
2) Do you need to stay in your lane of the highway and change something about yourself? When we are high and mighty about our principles we can get pretty angry about things. But notice how it feels in your body when you are condemning and judging something or someone. You may notice that you have left your body and do not feel grounded because you are stuck with all the “shoulds” someone else should do.
But how about bringing it back home to you? What can you do in your little world to fix what is in your hands to control? Is it by giving a donation, speaking more kindly to others, or volunteering in a homeless kitchen? Come back to your body, get grounded by feeling your feet on the floor and notice those uncomfortable sensations. Then conclude what action you can take to make a difference in your world.
Anger is a very important emotion and does not need to be destructive. Its wisdom through the body can help us discern what is in our control to change.

“The healing work that I experienced with Miriam’s somatic therapy gave me confidence. Miriam offers generous time to support a process that shifted my energy. “Reading Miriam Racquel Feldman’s memoir God Said What?! feels like sitting down across from the author to listen to her candidly speak her mind in a way others wish they could, and leaning in to hear her whisper innermost thoughts and personal reflections she’s not quite sure should be said aloud in mixed company.
Readers–regardless of their religious, cultural, or familial background–will find her raw honesty refreshing and relatable, not to mention educational (the Glossary of Terms and the Resources section at the back of the book are incredible), as the author shares her recollection of conversations, interactions, and traditions that give insight into aspects of the Jewish faith that may be unfamiliar to many.”~ Nonfiction Authors Association Book Awards Program
