11 Life Lessons I Learned From My Garden
11 Life Lessons I Learned From My Garden
Mindbody Wellness Clarity Tips
Dear Awesome Woman,
In spring and summer, the earth is alive with fragrant blooms. It’s my early morning (and afternoon and evening) habit to walk around my garden and marvel at the freshness happening all around me. There are so many life lessons to learn from nature and from the garden in particular. I’d love to share a few with you here:
1. Even though YOU CAN’T SEE IT, it doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
All winter long, the ground looked barren. There were either bare spaces or snow. But it was never truly barren. That belief was an illusion and delusion. There was plenty of stuff happening though I was not witness to it. It was behind the scenes.
And such is life. There is a lot going on in the physical and spiritual realms behind veils that we are not privy to seeing. When you do anything on this physical plane, you may not see the results right away or perhaps ever. But again, that does not mean that there hasn’t been an effect on you, on your soul, and in the world. Kabbalah teaches that deeds of kindness are eternal and have a great effect on the world, spiritually and physically. There is a refinement going on and the Zohar speaks of a time when there will be a revelation of the divine energy in all things. This is happening. Trust that it is and trust that your efforts are making a positive difference in this lifetime.
2. Everything has a life cycle.
A flower’s life cycle can be a metaphor for our own. At times, there is the seed that decomposes, the shoot that sprouts forth, the full bloom of a gorgeous flower.
In each of our lives, there are cycles of change that we go through. Sometimes we know what’s going on in our lives and feel like we have a handle on things. And sometimes we don’t. Sometimes we’re doing great in one part of our life, while lost and confused, sad or broken in another.
I love to share with my clients the 4 butterfly squares of change that life coach, Martha Beck, came up with and that illustrates the happenings in our lives in such a clear and concise way. We all have cycles that we go through in different areas of our lives: there is the meltdown (decomposition), the reimagining (cells arranging themselves to become something new), the efforts in the physical world (pushing through the dirt), and the taking of full flight with our wings (or to stick with the garden metaphor, the full bloom of a flower). Each square and cycle asks something different from us and it is with patience and self-compassion that we can experience these changes.
3. From something tiny, a beautiful bloom grows.
Size is insignificant to the beauty of something. Never belittle your efforts, large or small, in making a difference in your life and the world. Just as a seed is tiny, yet SIGNIFICANT, so are you!
4. Every day is a miracle of existence.
Here today, gone tomorrow. Never take anything for granted. In fact, in the morning and evening before bed, I have a white board and use color markers to list gratitudes. I start it out with: “Never take anything for granted.” Gratitude and appreciations are a very high vibration. That being said, I don’t dismiss my negative feelings either. I use the ROAR! Process, other mindbody techniques and compassion practices to process difficult situations. And then drop into more gratitude.
5. Decomposition gives way to growth and new life, new creativity.
A seed decomposes and then grows into a beautiful flower. When we let go of a past mess, it makes way for us to evolve into something even more beautiful than we were.
6. The soil and seeds need nourishment and water, nurturing and patience.
Nurture yourself. Don’t take yourself for granted. Just as a seed needs the “right” conditions to grow, so do you. Nurture yourself with care and magic can happen.
7. So many seeds look exactly alike, but there’s a blueprint that is completely different for each one.
For each of us, there is a blueprint, specific for us. We are meant to grow and change, shift and adapt within our personalities and natures. To get more clear about yours, my article, You Don’t Need to Do it Their Way, will be a help.
8. Put in effort, rest in patience.
Patience is being respectful of the divine timing of all things. Growing (growth) takes time. Not saying this is easy, but we can be kind to ourselves as we remember this truth.
9. Move something if it doesn’t work.
If something or someplace isn’t working, change it. Though I’m a person who loves stability, I don’t hesitate to shift things around if necessary. Bird feeders, flowers, and garden toys are metaphors for our lives—shift things up if something is hurting or feeling blocked. Get help if necessary.
10. Something precious needs to be protected.
A few years ago I was so excited to plant tulip bulbs as the chill of autumn set in. The next morning though I was horrified to find strewn pieces of the bulbs around the garden. I quickly realized who the culprits were—the squirrels. I googled how to protect bulbs from these playful, yet annoying critters and found a solution. After planting the bulbs, I covered the ground with chicken wire so they couldn’t be dug up. And that’s what I’ve done ever since.
And this is an important concept for life too. Your energy is precious, your time is precious, your mind and your body and your soul are precious. Protect yourself from Borderline/Narcissists, and energy vampires, including your very own inner one. Honor your vulnerability by choosing carefully what to share and who to share with (Circles of Trust).
11.Pushing through the dirt is a miraculous thing.
Give yourself credit where credit is due—celebrate yourself and don’t take your actions for granted. Put your hands up in the air and say, “Yay me!” (Arms Up and Cheer Yourself On). You’re doing an awesome job as a soul in a body on this ever-changing journey of life. Large or small, please do not dismiss your efforts even if you don’t see the blooms or fruits. Remember life lesson #1—a lot of unknown is happening behind the scenes.
Please take these life lessons to heart and if you live in a place where spring is happening, enjoy the greenery, the blooms, the colors, the fragrance and the new life issuing forth. Take moments in time to smell the flowers, admire the beauty and rest in nature. That mindfulness is great for relaxing your nervous system which means it’s great self-care for you.
A fresh new happening I’m excited to share is the recording of my memoir, God Said What?! #MyOrthodoxLife. I had to go through many “Rings of Fire” during the eight-year-long journey of birthing the book into the world as well as producing the professional recording. What a trip! But a worthwhile one indeed to share this tale of love, faith, and kabbalistic mystical happenings. Enjoy!
“This beautiful love story has a purity, a yearning, a heart guidance that is eternal. Miriam brings it to life in technicolor. There is a steady balanced rhythm of questioning, discovery and expansion; of exploration, learning and commitment; a perseverance of connection to self, to others and finally to G-d. The chapters are manageable, the writing simple yet compelling, continuously bringing the reader to a higher place of wisdom then back to the every day 5 senses. You can smell the baked chicken and feel the rush of the cool wind as she’s biking in the early morning. Thank you, Miriam, for making sure this magical book was published!” – Lee

“Miriam has a true understanding of a woman’s mind and feelings that get trapped in the body. I have trusted Miriam completely and knew I was in good hands, along with knowing I was in a safe environment during my time with her.” – J.M., Pennsylvania
“I began working with Miriam after several years of extreme stress and trauma due, among other things, to the prolonged illness of my mother. The grief, stress and other toxic emotions that these situations naturally generated were keeping me from moving forward in my business. In addition, the frustration of feeling so deeply stuck was affecting my relationships, my energy levels and sense of well-being, and more.
The sessions Miriam and I did together were healing and illuminating, interesting and uplifting. They took me deep into my intuition, gave me profound insights into some of the underlying limiting emotions and beliefs that were holding me back, allowed me to reframe many of the things that were in my way and in some cases to actually energetically move them aside.
After our work together, I was able to create an extremely successful program, and with far more ease than I would have expected. I have since recommended several people to Miriam, and would unequivocally do so for anyone who is interested in Mindbody coaching.”
Gratefully,
Shifra Hendrie
