The Shechina Rests on You
Words to Inspire—”God Said What?! #MyOrthodoxLife”
Dear Awesome Reader,
What is the Shechina? Many of us have heard the word before, but what is it truly?
The Shechina is the Divine Feminine Presence. It comes from the Hebrew root word, shochen, meaning to “dwell within.” This root word also contains the word ken which means “nest.”
Here’s a bit of Kabbalah for you:
“G-d’s ‘nest’ is the Shechina, “the Divine Presence,” that aspect of G-dhood which ‘descends’ to ‘dwell’ and to become ‘enclothed’ (involved) in lower realms. (maamer Bati Legani, 1950). Just as a nest is the bird’s dwelling, so, as it were, is Shechina (malchut) the dwelling place for the Holy One.’ (Likut Pirushim, Tanya).” (Hayom Yom — supplementary footnotes, p. 130).
Let’s take the metaphor further by understanding what a nest is.
A nest is a sacred place—a home to nurture the future. It is a womb (the Hebrew word, rechem, which is also the root word of compassion, rachamim)—a holy vessel where something precious sleeps and grows strong till it awakens and births.
As we travel our journeys in this world and do acts of goodness and kindness, give charity, and respect the Torah and the divine mitzvot, we are creating ourselves as vessels that receive the light of the Shechina, that holy nest. We are inner sanctuaries for the sacred and holy. Our homes, our bodies and our souls. We are G-d’s Nest.
Enjoy this beautiful song by Benny Friedman about the angels that surround us and the Shechina that rests above us.
“In the name of the God of Israel
With Michael on my right and Gabriel on my left, Uriel before me, Raphael behind me, and God’s presence above my head
Do not fear the night’s terror…
To God, to God, to God, to God, to God, to God, to God…
He who flies swiftly through the day, in the name of God”
Here’s a great charitable act that is of immediate importance:

“This was really a breath of fresh air. Miriam battled with her spirit and intellect, bringing the reader along for the journey. Her choices were well thought out and intentional. While there is also the whisper of miracles, the focus was on the intellectual process of returning home to comfortable and grounded tradition. If you’re confused about why someone might choose a very different path, this is the book to read. The flow makes easy reading out of a challenging topic. The personal narrative keeps the reader engaged and stuck to their couch.” – Yaffi
