Making Goals & Loving Your Nervous System At The Same Time!

Dear Awesome Woman,
Some time ago, I saw a goose with ducklings crossing a very busy street. Luckily, whizzing cars stopped, and there was no bloodshed. But instead of what usually comes to mind when I see this kind of scene which is “oh how cute,” I felt annoyed. “How dangerous!” I thought and the question that arose for me (and I would have asked that goose if I spoke goose language) was “do you really need to get to the other side?”
And then, because I’m a Somatic Healer and Coach and everything is a life lesson, I turned that question towards myself. I wondered if there were any goals that I had on my plate that weren’t so smart. How was I being like that goose? Like, did I really need to get to the other side? Or if I did want to get to the other side, was I approaching it in a smart way—meaning in a healthy way? Were the belief systems that I was using to get there unrealistic or expansive?
Big projects and big ideas always start with tiny bits of action after being formed in our imaginations. Our bodies can only move so fast and this physical world has limits. Our imaginations do not have limits and so bringing into form what exists in the realm of creativity is an art form. Even nests are built one fiber at a time.
Somatic/Mindbody Tip for Today?
Open up to possibilities and cease the pressure-push to get things done by respecting your body. LOVE YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM by respecting how it reacts with your mind pushing for accomplishments. It usually will go into fight and flight or freeze, if pressured.
Take small steps—sociologist, Martha Beck, who I was fortunate to get my life-coach certification from, suggests doing projects by taking a turtle step and then cutting that turtle step in half. That’s how small our increments of action can be to get things done. And your nervous system will thank you!
