Is Being Positive Harmful to Your Health?

We’re not angels and as much as we’d like to focus on the positive it can be harmful to our health.
Emotions are “energy in motion.” Each one has messages for us through our body. If we try to rationalize away what we are feeling, that energy can, G-d forbid, get stuck in the body and have harmful side effects.
After my first child was born almost 30 years ago, I was diagnosed with the autoimmune thyroid disease Hashimoto’s. Of course, the medical profession can contribute it to pregnancy and hormonal changes. But when I trained as a Somatic Healer and learned to recognize the connection between our emotions and our health, I had an “aha” realization.
During that time in my life, I had suppressed so much inside and in particular, my voice. I had been disrespectful to myself by letting my inner critic run the show; I had poor boundaries and didn’t speak up; I rationalized away people’s behavior and tried to judge and think positively. Any of this sound familiar?
I basically had a whole host of emotions—resentment, anger, fear, sadness, grief etc.—that I had never recognized or processed. Of course, back then, I had no idea how to do that, but it was unhealthy and my body suffered. Words were stuck inside my neck/throat area and my mind. And trying to be positive and rationalize away feelings just didn’t (and doesn’t) work!
This does not mean exploding all over everyone but it does mean being honest with yourself and allowing the flow of emotions in a healthy way. There are somatic techniques to prevent imploding and exploding.
