Tuesday Somatic/Mindbody Wellness Tip #20: No Spiritual Bypasses!

Dear Awesome Woman,
I haven’t written about spiritual bypasses before, but I see them being used by my clients sometimes to avoid feelings. Spiritual bypasses are when we think that we are too spiritual, too good, too holy to be human. We falsely believe that we can skip over our anger, our fear, our inner drama, our frustration, and our grief and just rationalize away real, raw emotions. But emotions are “energy in motion” and sit in the body as physical sensations. How can we ignore that energy?
We can’t—which means that if you jump to a spiritual bypass, that emotional energy just gets suppressed or stuck in cells, G-d forbid. And we miss the wisdom those emotions and our bodies want to share with us.
This is not necessary. There are somatic ways to release emotional energy.
Tuesday Somatic Tips for today?
1. Notice your spiritual bypass/rationalization habit:
“That person didn’t mean it and I need to judge them positively.”
“Source, the Universe, G-d only does good, so this must be good.”
“I can’t get the help I need by sharing this with someone because it’s not okay to speak negatively about another person.”
“A good friend, wife, person, religious person, parent should ….”
“A good friend, wife, person, religious person, parent should never…”
“Anger is a bad emotion.”
“Spiritually I know this is a good thing!”
2. Recognize your humanness by feeling the emotions in your body as physical sensations. Jaw clenched, stomach tight, breath short, etc. Acknowledge them! Greet them! Notice them! Listen for inner wisdom. And do the ROAR! Process so you don’t implode or explode on others. Be discerning, and wise and make changes if necessary.
An important note: Just because we feel something, doesn’t make everything that we’re thinking true. Thoughts change as do emotions. Emotions fluctuate, shift, and flow—remember, they are energy. But these emotions exist in the body for a reason and noticing them is the first step to accessing wisdom about what we’re thinking, what may need to be done about a situation or person, and what childhood wound may be coming up for us or not.

Bottom line, we can have our values and good moral systems, but we also need to hear what our bodies are telling us. This discernment will empower us and we can always choose our values as well.
